IRCC Processing Times See Mixed Shifts for Work and Study Permits

Maple News reports on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) latest update to processing times for temporary residents, which shows a mixed picture across work and study permits. The movement varies by visa type and applicant country, with some wait times tightening and others lengthening.

The update notes notable decreases for Canada-based study permit applications and for US-based super visa submissions. At the same time, Pakistan-based study permit applications recorded the largest increase in processing time in the latest snapshot, rising by about two weeks.

For work permits, IRCC data reflects a blended trend by country: Nigerian and US applicants saw shorter processing times by roughly a week, while Philippine-based submissions edged higher by about a week.

A country-by-country look at the latest numbers shows the following shifts for work permits: Canada moved from 212 days to 217 days; India remained at 9 weeks; Pakistan stayed at 8 weeks; Nigeria rose from 6 to 7 weeks; the United States moved from 5 to 6 weeks; and the Philippines dropped from 8 weeks to 7 weeks. Service standards remain consistent: in-Canada submissions (initial and extensions) target 120 days; submissions outside Canada target 60 days; International Experience Canada is 56 days.

For study permits, the newest data indicate that Canada and the United States saw longer wait times, while Pakistan and the Philippines posted shorter waits; India and Nigeria were largely unchanged. The country-specific picture shows Canada moving from 6 weeks to 8 weeks; India at 4 weeks; Pakistan from 11 weeks to 9 weeks; Nigeria at 5 weeks; the United States from 5 to 6 weeks; and the Philippines from 5 weeks to 4 weeks.

Overall, Maple News notes that applicants should monitor IRCC’s updates closely and plan accordingly, as processing times can shift with workload and policy adjustments across visa offices.
