Canada Fast-Tracks Citizenship Certificates for Trans Americans

Maple News reports that Canada is expediting proof-of-citizenship certificates for Americans with Canadian ancestry, with particular attention to applicants who identify as transgender. The policy shift follows December changes to the Citizenship Act that removed the generational limit on citizenship transmission, broadening eligibility for descendants of Canadian citizens.

This spring, thousands of Americans have pursued Canadian citizenship certificates as a back-up plan—a passport option in a shifting U.S. climate. While standard processing times have lengthened from roughly five months to about ten months, some trans applicants have reported notably faster handling under IRCC’s urgent-processing criteria.

IRCC allows urgent processing in cases where applicants face potential harm or hardship due to sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or membership in protected groups, as well as for those needing access to Canadian healthcare.

To request urgent processing, applicants must submit an explanation letter with supporting documents. If an officer determines eligibility, IRCC will expedite the review, but no specific timeline is guaranteed. The urgent request must accompany the complete proof-of-citizenship application, which requires the relevant form and copies of official documents proving descent from a Canadian ancestor; many Americans submit on paper.

Maple News will continue to monitor policy developments and their implications for trans Americans seeking safety, mobility, and a dual citizenship option in Canada.
