Maple News reports that Canada will bar entry to foreign nationals who have traveled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the prior 21 days, effective 11:59 p.m. on July 20, 2026. Private and commercial air carriers must deny boarding to those affected.
The entry ban is supported by an interim order under the Aeronautics Act and was announced by the Public Health Agency of Canada in a July 19, 2026 press release, as part of Canada’s response to the Ebola outbreak.
The ban will remain in place until August 29, 2026.
This measure follows earlier omnibus entry restrictions, in force since May 30, requiring a 21-day quarantine for travelers with recent travel to the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan. The immigration department also suspended immigration documents issued to foreign nationals from these regions and halted processing of immigration applications.
As of July 15, the World Health Organization reported 2,124 confirmed Ebola cases and 828 deaths in the DRC, with Uganda reporting 20 cases and two deaths, and South Sudan reporting none.
PHAC says the health risk to Canadians from Ebola remains low and notes that no travel-related cases have been reported in Canada to date.
