Canada Finishes 19th in 2026 Best Countries Ranking, Shining in Culture & Tourism

Maple News reports that Canada finished 19th overall in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 Best Countries rankings. Switzerland secured the top spot this year, followed by Denmark and Sweden, while the United States placed 18th—one position ahead of Canada.

Canada’s strongest performance came in Culture & Tourism, where the country ranked 8th globally. Governance and Infrastructure also contributed to Canada’s solid overall score, helping to bolster its standing in the new, data-driven framework.

The 2026 rankings mark the first year under a redesigned, data-driven methodology. Moving away from perception-based surveys, U.S. News evaluated 100 countries using 100 statistical indicators of national well-being.

The top 10 best countries in 2026 are: Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom, Finland, Luxembourg, and Austria.

Europe dominated the top 25 overall, accounting for 18 of the 25 spots. Other notable placements included Australia (14th) and, in the top 20, Singapore (16th), Japan (17th), and South Korea (20th), the only Asian countries represented in that tier.

Canada’s performance reflects how the 2026 rankings aggregate 100 indicators into 24 subcategories and eight broader categories, underscoring cultural appeal alongside governance and infrastructure. For policymakers and investors, the shift to data-driven rankings highlights Canada’s strengths in culture and tourism while signaling opportunities to strengthen governance and infrastructure in the years ahead.
