Maple News reports that with full details of the federal government’s In-Canada Workers Initiative still unclear, foreign nationals with aging language test results risk missing new opportunities.
Most permanent residence pathways in Canada require language test results to be valid at the time of application, and official tests remain valid for up to two years. Those with expired or soon-to-expire results should consider retaking the tests at the earliest opportunity to improve their position.
For those retaking this May, new results will be valid through May 2028, potentially broadening eligibility windows for future immigration programs.
The In-Canada Workers Initiative aims to transition up to 33,000 temporary workers to permanent residence in 2026 and 2027. To date, the measures announced primarily affect existing PR applicants, but the government has indicated that additional measures could follow as the initiative evolves.
Historically, Canada has faced rapid demand in similar pathways: the TR-to-PR route launched in 2021, and the international students pathway reached its application cap within a day, leaving those without valid language test results at a disadvantage. Strong English or French language scores will continue to be advantageous as policy details unfold.
A valid language score is essential for all economic immigration streams, including Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Program. For prospective graduates, language results are required in related applications such as post-graduation work permits, and applications returned as incomplete due to missing language results can jeopardize status.
CELPIP is available at more than 180 locations across Canada with flexible scheduling, and results can be issued in as little as two to four business days after testing. Retaking a test is allowed at any time, subject to a five-calendar-day interval between attempts, and there is no downside to pursuing a higher score since results remain valid for two years. Preparation resources are provided by CELPIP at no extra charge, including study guides and practice tests. Maple News recommends securing a test date promptly to stay ahead as policy details continue to develop.
Maple News will continue monitoring developments around the In-Canada Workers Initiative and provide updates as more information becomes available.
