Maple News reports that the Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, marking the third crossing between Ontario and Michigan along the Windsor-Detroit corridor.
The new span across the Detroit River joins the Ambassador Bridge and the Windsor–Detroit Tunnel, both among North America’s most congested border crossings, in serving a key bi-national corridor.
Designed to relieve long bottlenecks in the Windsor–Detroit area, the bridge aims to provide faster, more reliable cross-border travel for motorists and freight alike. The existing crossings can experience multi-hour waits during peak periods.
The Gordie Howe Bridge and its port of entry will operate 24/7, accommodating automobiles, motorcycles, RVs, and semi-trucks. The facility includes express lanes for Trusted Travellers Program (NEXUS) members and qualifying commercial shippers (FAST).
Pedestrians and cyclists will gain access via a dedicated multi-use path, separate from vehicle traffic, starting August 5. This makes it the first Windsor-Detroit crossing to offer non-motorized traffic.
Toll rates for standard passenger vehicles are set at 8 CAD, while larger commercial trucks, oversized vehicles, and larger passenger vehicles will be charged 12 CAD. The multi-use path will be toll-free. Canada Border Services Agency notes that the Gordie Howe International Bridge represents Canada’s largest and most technologically advanced land border crossing.
The opening marks the culmination of more than two decades of collaboration between Canadian and U.S. authorities and is expected to ease travel times and strengthen trade links across the border.
