In-Canada Work Permit Wait Times Dip to 186 Days, IRCC Data Shows

Maple News reports that the processing time for in-Canada work permit applications has eased by almost a month, standing at 186 days as of June 10, 2026, down from 212 days on May 6, according to data released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). This marks the lowest 2026 figure recorded so far.\n\nThe updated wait time covers both new work permit applications and extensions of existing permits. \n\nIRCC employs two processing estimates: historical and forward-looking. The 186-day figure is based on historical estimates, reflecting how long it has historically taken to finalize 80% of applications of a given type.\n\nDespite the improvement, this processing time remains well above IRCC’s aspirational service standard, which targets 80% of in-Canada work permit applications to be processed within four months.\n\nApplicants who apply to extend their permits before expiry continue to benefit from maintained status, allowing them to work under the conditions of their expired permit while their application is processed, provided they remain in Canada.\n\nIn April 2026, Canada extended the validity of work permit support letters from six months to one year, to better accommodate longer processing times. These letters serve as evidence of maintained status to employers and other government bodies during the processing period.\n\nLooking ahead, IRCC’s two-estimate framework means timelines can fluctuate with volumes and policy changes. Maple News will monitor developments and update readers as processing times shift. Practical steps for applicants include applying early, ensuring complete documentation, and maintaining status throughout the processing period.
