Canada’s Temporary Residence Wait Times Shift Modestly in Latest IRCC Update, Maple News Reports

Maple News reports that IRCC updated processing-time estimates on May 26 for temporary-residence applications, including work permits, study permits, visitor visas, and super visas. Overall changes were modest, with many categories showing little movement and some lingering or new backlogs.

In the work-permit category, shifts were uneven across country of origin. Wait times for applicants inside Canada eased slightly to 201 days, down from 206 days. India moved higher, with current processing times at 10 weeks (up from 9 weeks). Nigeria saw the sharpest jump, rising to 16 weeks from 12 weeks. Pakistan and the United States remained unchanged at 6 and 5 weeks, respectively, while the Philippines held at 8 weeks. Service standards for work permits remain 120 days for in-Canada submissions and 60 days for those filed from outside Canada.

For study permits, most markets showed little change. Overall, processing times were stable, with the Philippines notable for a one-week decrease to 4 weeks; other major origins—Canada (6 weeks), India (4 weeks), Pakistan (7 weeks), Nigeria (6 weeks), and the United States (5 weeks)—were unchanged. The same service standards apply: 120 days for in-Canada submissions and 60 days for outside-Canada submissions.

Visitor visa updates show a nine-day increase for in-Canada submissions, while the summary did not highlight other country-specific changes. This suggests a modest shift within Canada-based processing, with outside-Canada timelines largely steady in the latest.update.

Super visas experienced a notable move as well, with a nine-day decrease for submissions from the United States. As with other categories, IRCC maintains a service standard of 120 days for in-Canada and 60 days for outside-Canada submissions.

Maple News notes that these weekly updates reflect ongoing backlogs and capacity pressures affecting temporary-residence processing. For applicants and employers alike, these timing changes underscore the importance of planning ahead and checking the official IRCC estimates regularly for the most current figures.
