Canada’s Proof-of-C citizenship Wait Time Climbs to 15 Months as Queue Surpasses 82,000, Maple News Reports

Maple News reports that processing times for proof of Canadian citizenship certificates have surged to about 15 months as of June 2026, with roughly 82,000 applications in the queue. The development affects those applying for citizenship by descent who must obtain proof of citizenship as part of their immigration or status processes.

IRCC data show the queue stood at about 70,400 on May 12. In under a month, an additional 11,600 applicants joined the line, signaling a rapid buildup in demand.

The shift follows December 2025 when eligibility was expanded under Bill C-3, broadening who qualifies for citizenship. Since then, processing times have jumped from around 9 months to 15 months, and the application backlog has more than doubled in size.

IRCC notes that the 15-month estimate is based on the current queue, and wait times could lengthen further if more applications are filed. The dynamic underscores ongoing pressures on Canada’s citizenship processing system.

For applicants, longer waits for proof of citizenship can affect travel plans, document readiness, and other processes tied to confirming status. As demand remains high, officials may seek capacity enhancements and digital modernization to address the backlog in the near term.
