Canada suspends about 36,000 permanent residence applications amid Ebola-related risk measures

Maple News reports that Canada has suspended processing of around 36,000 permanent residence (PR) applications as part of quarantine measures targeting foreign nationals in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and the Republic of South Sudan.

Permanent residence visas issued to individuals from these regions have also been suspended, preventing about 1,700 PR visa holders from traveling to Canada.

Temporary residence applicants and holders of temporary residence documents, including temporary resident visas (TRVs) and electronic travel authorizations (eTAs), have also been affected. The measures took effect on May 27 and are set to last 90 days.

During the suspension period, affected applications will not be processed, and document holders cannot travel to Canada unless they qualify under a specific exemption.

The measures were introduced because foreign nationals residing in the three countries face a high or very high risk of an Ebola outbreak. The order appeared in the Canada Gazette on June 13, 2026, at 2 p.m. Maple News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more details become available.
