Maple News reports that Yukon has simplified the licensing path for internationally trained family physicians from Australia, Ireland, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Under the new Limited A licensing pathway, eligible physicians can be authorized to practice in Yukon without completing an additional practice assessment or supervised practice period.
To qualify, doctors must have an opportunity to practice in Yukon and meet the Yukon Medical Council’s requirements.
Previously, physicians under the Limited Family Practice Register were required to undergo practice assessments and clinical supervision.
The measure was announced in a July 22 Yukon government news release after Minister of Health and Social Services Brad Cathers issued a General Declaration of Need in response to a shortage of family physicians in the territory. The government noted that foreign jurisdictions were selected for having medical standards similar to Canada.
The Yukon government has said there is potential to expand the initiative to additional countries approved by the College of Family Physicians of Canada, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen primary care, support physician recruitment, and improve access to health services for Yukoners.
