Canada Prioritizes Skilled Trades in Express Entry to Tackle Labour Shortages

Maple News reports that skilled trades are now a key focus of Canada’s Express Entry program, as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduces new category-based draws designed to fill critical labour market gaps. The policy shift comes as part of a broader federal strategy launched earlier this year to meet growing employment demands in five key sectors: healthcare, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), transportation, agriculture/agri-food, and trades.

Under this new selection approach, candidates with work experience in these targeted fields are prioritized, regardless of their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores, which traditionally formed the basis of Express Entry invitations. The first targeted draw took place on June 28, 2023, and has since been followed by additional rounds specific to these essential occupations.

The inclusion of trades in this list reflects Canada’s increasing need for skilled tradespeople. According to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), skilled trades are not only in high demand but vital to the functioning of numerous industries and communities across the country. ESDC estimates that more than 256,000 new apprentices will be needed by 2028 to meet emerging job demands.

Additionally, a recent government report highlights the importance of sustaining certification in the Red Seal Trades—Canada’s nationally-recognized standard for over 50 trades. Between 2022 and 2026, more than 122,000 new journeypersons must enter the workforce to ensure continued certification levels in key trades areas.

The Red Seal program plays a central role in this talent strategy. Tradespeople who obtain Red Seal certification demonstrate nationally recognized competence, enabling smoother mobility and job prospects across provinces. This makes Red Seal trades particularly attractive for new immigrants and foreign workers aiming to establish durable careers in Canada.

By targeting skilled trades through Express Entry, Canada aligns its immigration system with domestic economic needs, providing a tailored pathway for professionals in critical occupations. For international tradespeople, this presents a timely and valuable opportunity to join a welcoming workforce facing urgent recruitment needs.

Maple News will continue to follow developments in Canada’s Express Entry system and report on how these changes impact skilled workers worldwide.
