Maple News reports that, as of July 21, 2026, Canada’s immigration department will begin sharing monthly updates on the share of permanent residence (PR) applications that are in active processing versus those waitlisted for future processing.
Some applications will be waitlisted due to insufficient permanent residence admissions spaces under the 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan.
The monthly figures will cover three PR categories: Economic, Family, and Protection, and will be adjusted based on IRCC’s inventory in each category at the end of each month.
The update comes with a revamped application inventory webpage on IRCC’s site; the government says it will no longer publish data on the proportion of the inventory being processed within service standards, overall or by category.
Under the plan, applications will continue to be processed if there is space in the levels plan; if there is no space, the application will be waitlisted until space becomes available.
The government notes that when applications exceed available spaces, some must wait into future years, which can extend processing times.
This move increases transparency around how wait times are allocated, though applicants should expect longer waits in some programs as spaces fill.
