Canada to Fast-Track AI Work Permits Through Global Talent Stream

Maple News reports that on June 4, the federal government unveiled plans to fast-track work permits for artificial intelligence professionals, as part of Canada’s push to attract and retain AI talent.\n\nUnder the proposal, the AI worker stream would operate through the Global Talent Stream (GTS), a component of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The plan targets a start-to-finish processing time of 20 days for work permits, with Labour Market Impact Assessments processed in about 10 days and work permit applications processed in roughly another 10 days, compared with the current typical range of two to six months for standard TFWP permits.\n\nAccording to the government’s press release, the AI worker stream would be accompanied by measures to support the transition of AI workers to permanent residence in Canada. No details were provided on eligibility criteria, how employers or foreign workers would qualify, or a firm launch date.\n\nThe initiative is presented in the context of Canada’s AI for All strategy, part of the federal plan to spur economic growth. The strategy projects roughly $200 billion in additional growth, aims to create about 250,000 new AI-related jobs over the next five years, and seeks to raise AI adoption from just over 12% to 60% by 2034.\n\nMaple News notes that the Global Talent Stream currently comprises two categories, designed to help Canadian employers hire highly skilled foreign workers in specialized tech and in-demand occupations, signaling a broader move to accelerate access to critical talent for Canada’s AI-driven economy.
