Canada Passport Now Outranks the U.S.; Millions of Americans May Have a Claim to Canadian Citizenship, Maple News Reports

Maple News reports a notable shift in global mobility: Canada’s passport now offers visa-free access to more destinations than the United States, according to the Henley Passport Index. As of April 2026, Canadian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to 182 destinations, ranking seventh, while U.S. passport holders have visa-free access to 179 destinations, ranking tenth.

The gap between the two nations has narrowed over time, with Canada first pulling ahead in January 2025 and maintaining the lead since.

In a parallel development, Canada passed a citizenship law expanding eligibility for Americans with Canadian ancestry, potentially giving millions a pathway to Canadian citizenship.

Under the new rule, the generation limit on citizenship by descent was removed for those born before December 15, 2025. Anyone who can prove a Canadian ancestor—whether a parent, grandparent, great-grandparent, or a more distant relative—may apply for proof of citizenship, even if their immediate family has long lived in the United States.

Unlike a traditional naturalization process, applying for proof of citizenship does not require a citizenship test, a residence period, or an oath. Once approved, holders can then apply for a Canadian passport.

Beyond passport benefits, citizenship by descent can unlock programs such as International Experience Canada (IEC), which enables eligible Canadian citizens aged 18 to 35 to work abroad in a broad network of partner countries.

Analysts say the combined mobility gains and expanded eligibility could influence migration planning, strengthen diaspora ties, and shape cross-border talent and travel trends as global travel rules continue to evolve.

Maple News will continue to monitor official guidance and policy updates for those pursuing citizenship by descent or a Canadian passport.
