Building Express Entry Experience: Flexible Paths to a Strong ITA

Maple News reports that prospective and current Express Entry candidates have multiple avenues to accumulate eligible work experience across categories, a key factor in securing an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in category-based draws, which typically feature lower cut-off scores.

Following the February 2026 update, candidates aiming for these special selections must have at least 12 months of work in an eligible occupation, up from the previous 6-month requirement.

A core point for applicants is the flexibility in how work experience is earned. Eligible work can be gained through full-time or equivalent part-time roles, and it does not need to be continuous.

Full-time work is defined as 30 hours per week, totaling 1,560 hours per year. Hours beyond this threshold within the same year do not accelerate the accrual of eligible work experience, meaning the pace cannot be sped up simply by working more in a single period. There is also nuance around remote work: in some edge cases, a combination of in-person and remote work—including foreign and Canadian experience—may count, but final acceptance rests with the reviewing immigration officer and policy interpretations.

For applicants planning their Express Entry strategy, focus on occupations in demand, ensure your work history aligns with eligibility criteria, maintain precise records of hours worked, and stay informed about policy changes. Maple News will continue to provide updates and practical guidance as the rules evolve.
