Ottawa Tops North America for Quality of Life in 2026 Rankings

Maple News reports that Ottawa has been ranked as the city with the highest quality of life in North America for 2026, according to newly released data from Numbeo. Not only does Canada’s capital lead the continent, it also lands at 28th on the global scale—reinforcing its reputation as one of the world’s most livable cities.

The rankings are based on key factors that shape day-to-day experiences, including cost of living, safety, health care, environmental quality, and average commute times. Thanks to its strong scores across these metrics, Ottawa has outperformed other major cities throughout North America.

Across Canada, 17 cities from seven provinces made it onto Numbeo’s 2026 Quality of Life Index. Ontario led the way with six cities featured: Ottawa, Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, London, and Hamilton. British Columbia followed with four cities—Nanaimo, Victoria, Vancouver, and Kelowna—while Alberta contributed Calgary and Edmonton to the list.

Quebec also made a strong showing with Montreal and Quebec City earning recognition. Other provinces represented include Saskatchewan with Regina, Manitoba with Winnipeg, and Nova Scotia with Halifax.

This year’s list includes three new entrants—Brampton, Hamilton, and Nanaimo—marking an increase from 14 Canadian cities featured in 2025 to 17 now in 2026. The continued presence of cities across all seven provinces reflects a nationwide commitment to livability and urban well-being.

Nationally, Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec dominate the top five positions, signaling broader regional strengths when it comes to the elements that define quality urban life.

Numbeo’s Quality of Life Index is based on crowdsourced data, collected globally and updated regularly. It remains a trusted resource for comparing the socio-economic environment of cities around the world.

For newcomers, immigrants, and investors alike, these rankings highlight Canadian cities not just as economic hubs, but as thriving communities where quality of life is a central priority.
