Maple News reports that international visitors currently in Canada can now apply for an employer-specific work permit without the need to leave the country, thanks to a significant update from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The new policy came into effect on August 24 and is expected to make it easier for temporary residents with valid job offers to transition into the Canadian workforce more seamlessly.
Previously, visitors in Canada who wanted to obtain a work permit were typically required to apply from overseas. Even if approved, they had to exit and re-enter the country to activate their permit. This new temporary public policy eliminates that step, streamlining the process and reducing logistical challenges during an already complex time for global mobility.
Eligible applicants for this new work pathway include a wide range of temporary visitors, including those holding Super Visas, business visitors, and participants in programs under the Global Skills Strategy. However, this policy only applies to individuals already in Canada on or before August 24; new visitors arriving after this date are not eligible under the current rules.
The move is part of Canada’s efforts to facilitate economic recovery in the wake of labour market disruptions driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. With many employers struggling to fill roles, particularly in essential and high-demand sectors, this policy change enables businesses to tap into the talent pool already present within Canada’s borders.
“We have heard from employers who continue to face challenges recruiting and hiring the workers they need during the pandemic,” said Marco Mendicino, Canada’s immigration minister. “This exemption from the standard work permit process removes barriers and helps us build a more responsive, agile workforce.”
The new policy not only simplifies paperwork for applicants but also shortens the time frame for employers to onboard skilled workers. It reflects Canada’s broader strategy to attract global talent and reinforce its immigration system as a tool for economic growth.
Maple News recommends that eligible visitors interested in transitioning to a work permit act swiftly, as policies such as this may evolve. Applicants must ensure they meet all eligibility criteria, including securing a valid job offer from a Canadian employer and remaining within the country during the process.
