Canada Extends Special Visa Measures for Ukrainians Until 2026

Maple News reports that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended key temporary immigration support for Ukrainian nationals through the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). Under this extension, Ukrainians who arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024, can apply to extend their work permits, study permits, or visitor status through to March 31, 2026.

Introduced in March 2022 as a humanitarian response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the CUAET program has helped over 200,000 Ukrainians seek safety and opportunity in Canada. The latest update ensures those already in the country won’t be subjected to sudden changes in their immigration status and can continue to live, work, or study under facilitated conditions.

However, the IRCC has clarified that only those already in Canada and with an approved CUAET application qualify for the extension. Ukrainians who applied but haven’t yet received a decision are not eligible for expedited processing. Officials cited the complexity of some 2023 applications as the reason for ongoing delays.

For Ukrainian nationals who arrived after March 31, 2024, the CUAET pathway is no longer available. These individuals must navigate Canada’s standard immigration and permit streams and are required to pay regular fees. Similarly, those whose CUAET applications were denied may still explore other temporary immigration options through Canada’s regular work, study, or visitor programs.

The CUAET program also opens doors toward permanent residency for those who engage in work or study during their stay. Many federal and provincial immigration pathways reward Canadian work experience or post-secondary education, making it possible for eligible Ukrainians to transition from temporary to permanent status over time.

Through this extension, Canada reaffirms its commitment to supporting Ukrainians amid ongoing geopolitical instability, while also helping eligible individuals contribute meaningfully to communities across the country.

Maple News will continue monitoring further developments related to emergency immigration programs and pathways to Canadian permanent residence.
