Maple News reports that student work experience may play a role in the Canadian immigration process through Express Entry—depending on the specific program a candidate is applying through.
Express Entry is Canada’s online immigration application system, managing three main programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). While all three require prior work experience to be eligible for permanent residence (PR), not all programs treat student work the same.
Under the FSWP, applicants are permitted to count relevant work experience gained during their studies—either inside or outside Canada—towards their eligibility, with strict conditions. The work must have been paid (through wages or commissions), continuous without gaps, and must meet all other federal criteria regarding job classification and duties. Notably, co-op placements and apprenticeships that satisfy these requirements are also valid.
However, for those applying through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), student work experience—regardless of where it was earned—does not count toward the minimum work requirements. Candidates under these programs must have gained their work experience after completing their studies.
In terms of the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which IRCC uses to evaluate and rank candidate profiles in Express Entry, student work does not contribute directly to the core CRS points related to Canadian work experience. Still, completing a Canadian educational credential or acquiring language proficiency while studying can increase CRS scores in other categories, giving candidates an indirect advantage.
Understanding how different work experiences are treated across programs is essential before applying. Candidates should carefully consider which Express Entry stream best aligns with their background and ensure their profile meets eligibility before expecting an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
