Maple News reports that staying informed about your immigration application status is a key priority for many newcomers to Canada. Fortunately, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) offers several tools to help applicants keep track of their progress.
One of the most widely used resources is the IRCC Secure Account, where applicants can log in to receive basic updates about their application. However, for those seeking more comprehensive information, IRCC has introduced the Application Status Tracker (AST) — a tool designed to offer detailed, real-time insights into various types of applications.
The AST is currently available for individuals who have applied under specific categories such as Express Entry, study permits, work permits, spousal or family sponsorship, and visitor visas. This platform provides clarity on several aspects of an application, including its current stage, progress on background checks and medical exams, and next steps.
Through the AST, users can view key application metrics, such as whether the application has been received, is in progress, or is closed. It also provides updates on document verification (including results of medical and biometric assessments), contact information, and any follow-up actions needed from the applicant.
In addition to the AST, applicants may request their Global Case Management System (GCMS) notes. These notes offer a behind-the-scenes look at their file, including case officer comments and timelines. Although GCMS notes are more complex and don’t offer immediate updates, they are a valuable resource for those seeking deeper insight.
It’s important not to confuse the AST with IRCC’s other platform — the Client Application Status portal. While both remain active, the Client Application Status site supports a wider range of applications, including those related to Canadian citizenship, permanent residence obligations, and PR cards, which are not covered by the AST.
Before you can access your application through the AST, five key steps must occur in the processing pipeline. These preliminaries ensure that your application is in the system and ready for live tracking.
According to Maple News, staying proactive by checking your application status regularly not only reduces uncertainty but also allows immigrants to respond promptly to IRCC requests — ultimately improving the chances of a smooth immigration journey to Canada.
