Canada Poised to Unveil New Travel Rules Ahead of Border Deadline

Maple News reports that Canada’s federal government is preparing to announce revamped COVID-19 travel measures, expected as early as Monday, ahead of the current border restrictions expiring on July 21.

Since March 2020, Canada has maintained strict international travel restrictions, extending them month-to-month throughout 2021 as part of its cautious reopening strategy. Presently, entry is limited to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, newcomers holding approved immigrant visas, temporary foreign workers, international students, and immediate family members of Canadians.

Tourists, however, remain barred — including those from the United States and other countries. In addition, direct passenger flights from India have been suspended since April due to concerns over the Delta variant, with no clear timeline for resumption.

According to a recent statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office, new entry protocols are to be shared early this week, potentially no later than Tuesday — just one day before the current measures lapse.

The government has indicated that it plans to permit fully vaccinated tourists from the U.S., including citizens and permanent residents, to enter Canada starting mid-August. Fully vaccinated international tourists from other countries could be welcomed as early as September, contingent upon Canada’s continued high vaccination rates and sustained control over COVID-19 case numbers.

While specific details of the revised travel policies are not yet confirmed, the federal announcement is expected to clarify timelines and vaccination requirements for various categories of visitors. The government remains non-committal regarding the status of India flight restrictions, suggesting this decision may come separately or at a later time.

Maple News will continue to monitor the situation and provide timely updates as new regulations are formally announced.

These impending changes signal a cautious but meaningful shift toward reopening Canada’s borders to international tourism — a move that will be closely watched by travelers, families, and the global business community alike.
