Canada and UK Surpass US as Top Choices for International Students

According to Maple News, Canada and the United Kingdom have officially overtaken the United States as the most preferred study abroad destinations, based on findings from multiple surveys conducted by the education platform educations.com. The shift marks a notable milestone in international student mobility and sentiment.

Data collected between January 2018 and October 2020 show a consistent decline in the United States’ popularity among international students, while Canada and the UK witnessed steady gains in interest. In early 2018, the US led globally, with 21.6% of survey respondents selecting it as their top study destination. By late 2020, that number had dropped sharply to just 10.7%, putting the US in third place.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom increased in popularity from 12.7% to approximately 15%, becoming the top choice for many respondents. Canada followed closely, rising from 10.1% to 13.8% over the same period. Additional top destinations included Germany, Australia, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Sweden.

What’s most notable is that the drop in interest for the US was not marked by a single event, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, it appears to have been a gradual and ongoing trend over time. This suggests a broader shift in international student perceptions and priorities.

One of the key factors behind this changing landscape is post-study work opportunities. Countries that offer clear and accessible pathways for graduates to remain and work after their studies are gaining traction. Canada and the UK both provide more favorable post-graduation immigration policies compared to the increasingly restrictive visa policies in the US.

Today’s international students are not only looking for quality education but also long-term prospects. Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) and recent supportive changes in the UK’s Graduate Route program offer graduates up to three years to remain and work, adding to the appeal of those countries.

Maple News notes that these findings reflect a broader trend among students looking for welcoming environments, career development opportunities, and immigration pathways. As Canada continues to attract international talent through both its world-class education system and favorable immigration policies, it solidifies its position as a global leader in education and skilled migration.
