Maple News reports that Canada and Italy have signed an enhanced bilateral youth mobility agreement, offering expanded opportunities for young adults to work and travel between the two countries. The new agreement, signed on December 11 by Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Marco Mendicino, and Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio, broadens the scope of participation for citizens aged 18 to 35.
Under the updated framework, eligible Canadian and Italian youth can live, work, and explore in each other’s country for up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending their stay for an additional year. This means participants may be eligible to spend up to 24 months abroad under the new terms.
The partnership operates under the International Experience Canada (IEC) program, which supports cultural exchange and career development through three primary streams: Working Holiday, International Co-op (Internship), and Young Professionals. While overall travel remains restricted due to the ongoing global pandemic, youth with valid job offers may still be permitted to enter Canada through the IEC framework.
“This agreement provides Canadian and Italian youth with more opportunities to gain international exposure and skills,” Mendicino stated. “In today’s interconnected global economy, experiences abroad foster cross-cultural understanding and drive innovation.”
The collaboration between Canada and Italy on youth mobility dates back to 2006. This enhanced agreement builds upon that foundation and will come into effect following ratification in both countries.
Italy is home to one of Canada’s most prominent heritage communities, with over 1.5 million Canadians of Italian descent. Strengthening youth exchange highlights the importance of cultural ties and encourages younger generations to deepen those connections.
Since 2008, over 200,000 Canadian citizens have participated in the IEC program. Currently, Canada holds youth mobility agreements with 36 countries, promoting reciprocal work and travel opportunities for young adults worldwide.
This agreement not only supports personal growth and professional experience but also fosters diplomacy and cultural diversity by giving young people from both countries the opportunity to live and learn abroad.
Maple News will continue to monitor the implementation timeline and future developments regarding this bilateral agreement.
