Three Canadian Universities Secure Top 35 Spots in QS World Rankings 2024

Maple News reports that three of Canada’s most prestigious universities have earned spots among the top 35 institutions globally in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, an influential benchmark for students worldwide evaluating higher education options. The highly respected QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings, renowned for assessing academic excellence internationally, evaluated over 1,400 universities for this edition.

The University of Toronto, McGill University, and the University of British Columbia—leading institutions in Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia, respectively—made their mark in this global evaluation. These provinces also happen to be Canada’s most popular destinations for newcomers, particularly international students.

The University of Toronto climbed significantly in this year’s ranking, moving from 34th in 2023 to 21st in 2024, with an impressive overall score of 86.3. U of T received outstanding ratings in academic reputation, employer reputation, and international diversity. With three campuses spread across Ontario, it continues to cement its status as a global leader in research and innovation.

McGill University, located in Montreal, maintains its strong international reputation, ranking 30th globally. Known for its high academic performance and diverse student body, McGill remains a top choice for students aiming to study in a bilingual and multicultural environment.

The University of British Columbia (UBC), situated in Vancouver, rounds out Canada’s top three with a ranking of 34th. UBC is celebrated for its research-intensive programs and strong global collaborations, offering students both academic excellence and proximity to a thriving tech and innovation ecosystem on Canada’s West Coast.

According to QS, institutions are evaluated based on various indicators: academic and employer reputation, faculty-to-student ratio, citations per faculty, and international student and staff ratios. These criteria help paint a well-rounded picture of a school’s performance on both academic and global engagement fronts.

The strong performance of these Canadian universities underscores the country’s reputation as a top destination for international education, bolstering Canada’s profile as an academic hub committed to excellence and global inclusion.
