Who Needs to Submit Biometrics to Stay in Canada?

Maple News reports that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires most applicants for Canadian immigration programs to submit biometrics, helping the government verify identities and detect past immigration or criminal issues.

Biometrics include fingerprints, a digital photo, and biographic data like your name and birthdate. These are collected electronically during an in-person session at a designated biometrics collection point.

If you are between the ages of 14 and 79, IRCC will generally require your biometrics if you’re applying for or renewing certain immigration statuses in Canada, including temporary resident visas (except U.S. nationals), permanent residence, and refugee protection.

Permanent residency applicants must provide new biometrics every time they submit a PR application. This includes individuals applying for a permanent resident visa, requesting to remain in Canada as a permanent resident, or applying for a PR card for the first time—particularly if they were under 14 and previously exempt.

For temporary residence, biometrics are typically required when applying for a temporary resident visa, a work or study permit (including renewals), a temporary resident permit, an extension or restoration of temporary status, and more. Notably, individuals who previously submitted biometrics may not need to do so again—provided their information is still valid.

However, IRCC notes that biometrics are only valid for 10 years when applying for temporary status. If that timeframe has passed and you’re applying to extend your stay, you may choose to re-submit your biometrics even if not explicitly asked, to avoid future delays.

Maple News encourages prospective immigrants and temporary visitors to stay informed about biometric requirements, as these are critical to the success and timeliness of their applications.

Additional guidance, processing times, and appointment booking for biometric collection are available through official immigration channels. Applicants are advised to prepare thoroughly to avoid disruptions in their travel or immigration plans.
