Quebec Suspends Family Sponsorship for Adult Relatives Until 2026

Maple News reports that the Quebec government has temporarily suspended new applications for certain family sponsorships under its family reunification program, effective until June 25, 2026. The measure affects those intending to sponsor a spouse, common-law or conjugal partner, or a dependent child aged 18 or older.

The Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration (MIFI) announced the suspension on July 9, 2025, citing that it has already reached the maximum number of allowed undertaking applications in these categories for the current intake period, which spans from June 26, 2024, to June 25, 2026. According to MIFI’s plan, up to 10,400 applications in these categories were to be accepted during this time frame.

Applications received after the cap was reached are being returned to applicants. These submissions are not being processed, and no application fees will be charged.

Despite the pause, several exemptions remain in place. Sponsors can continue to submit applications for dependent children under 18, orphaned minor relatives, adopted minor children, dependent adult children with disabilities, and dependents of already-approved applicants.

The suspension does not apply to other categories of family sponsorship. Quebec is still accepting up to 2,600 sponsorship applications for parents, grandparents, and other eligible relatives between 2024 and 2026. These applications continue to be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

This pause marks a notable policy step as Quebec manages its immigration targets and system capacity. Family reunification is a vital immigration stream, and such decisions often reflect broader discussions around integration, settlement support, and demographic balance within the province.

According to Maple News, further changes or new intake schedules will be announced by MIFI by June 25, 2026. Until then, individuals who fall outside of the approved categories must wait for the next available application window.
