Maple News reports that thousands of future Canadians are arriving more prepared than ever, thanks to pre-arrival services like the Planning for Canada (PfC) program. Funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), PfC has supported over 65,000 immigrants from 111 countries since 2007, helping them lay a strong foundation for life in their new home—before they’ve even landed.
Pre-arrival services are designed for individuals who have already been approved for permanent residence. These services provide guidance and useful tools to help immigrants navigate the challenges and opportunities of starting life in Canada. From providing accurate information about living and working in Canada to connecting newcomers with community supports and employment guidance, the goal is to enable a smoother transition and faster integration.
According to the 2021 Census, nearly 25% of Canada’s population is foreign-born, highlighting the growing significance of tailored support like pre-arrival programs. These services help immigrants make informed decisions, set realistic expectations, and feel confident in their move. Yet, despite their effectiveness, many eligible newcomers remain unaware of their availability.
Planning for Canada offers a comprehensive suite of services delivered virtually in English and French, with additional support in Tagalog, Hindi, and Punjabi. Services include live webinars, workshops, self-paced e-learning modules, one-on-one planning sessions, and access to a digital resource library. Topics range from job readiness and housing to healthcare, workplace culture, school systems, and mental wellness. Specialized modules are also available for women, youth, seniors, and persons with disabilities.
Former participants like Nithya from India emphasize the practical nature of the program: “PfC helped me gain a clear understanding of what to expect in Canada and how to prioritize my settlement tasks upon arrival.” Facilitators also report that pre-arrival support enables newcomers to ask questions they might not feel comfortable discussing with family or friends and receive direct, trustworthy answers.
A facilitator noted, “Our job is to present an honest picture of Canadian life—not to sugarcoat it. That honesty helps immigrants come prepared, not disillusioned.” By offering realistic and tailored advice, PfC allows individuals to arrive with awareness and preparedness instead of confusion or stress.
Whether through its Immigrant Workshop, Personalized Planning Sessions, or specialized learning tracks, PfC empowers immigrants with vital knowledge and connection, ultimately boosting their confidence and chances of early success.
If you’ve been approved under the economic, family-class, or Atlantic Immigration Program, you may be eligible to register for free PfC services and begin your journey to Canada with clarity and confidence.
