Maple News reports that Ontario has opened its immigration year with a strong start by issuing 484 Notifications of Interest (NOIs) through two of its targeted Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) streams. On January 13, 2021, the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) extended invitations to candidates in the French-Speaking Skilled Worker and the Skilled Trades streams—both of which are aligned with the federal Express Entry system.
A total of 338 candidates were invited under the Skilled Trades stream. To be eligible, these individuals needed at least one year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) work experience in a designated skilled trade while residing in Ontario. Eligible trades fall within the National Occupational Classification (NOC) groups: minor group 633 and major groups 72, 73, or 82. Candidates selected in this draw had Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores between 434 and 460.
The remaining 146 invitations were issued through the French-Speaking Skilled Worker stream. This stream is tailored for bilingual candidates in the Express Entry pool who meet the criteria of either the Canadian Experience Class or the Federal Skilled Worker Program. Applicants must demonstrate strong proficiency in both official languages, with a minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of 7 in French and 6 in English. CRS scores of these invitees ranged from 456 to 460.
Notably, neither of the two streams requires a job offer to apply. However, candidates must meet all eligibility requirements set by both federal and provincial immigration guidelines.
By receiving a provincial invitation through these Express Entry-linked streams, candidates automatically gain an additional 600 CRS points. This substantial boost practically guarantees an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency in Canada in a subsequent federal Express Entry draw.
This latest draw reflects Ontario’s continued efforts to attract French-speaking talent and skilled tradespeople to meet labour market needs and support its economic growth. Aligned with Canada’s broader immigration strategy, it highlights the crucial role the Express Entry system plays in offering permanent pathways to highly qualified, in-demand individuals.
Maple News will continue to monitor and report on key developments in Canada’s provincial immigration draws and policy changes.
