Maple News reports that those who did not receive an invitation under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) 2023, which issued application invites from October 10–23, still have a meaningful path to reunite with their loved ones in Canada — the Super Visa.
The Super Visa is a long-term, multiple-entry visitor visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Unlike a typical visitor visa, which allows a stay of up to six months, the Super Visa permits eligible individuals to stay in Canada for up to five consecutive years without renewing their status. What’s more, holders of an existing Super Visa can now apply for extensions, allowing them to remain in Canada for up to seven years at a time.
Another major advantage is that the Super Visa is available year-round and not restricted to a lottery like the PGP. This makes it a more accessible and predictable option for families looking to spend extended time together in Canada. Additionally, individuals from countries that require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) will particularly benefit. Once granted a Super Visa, they can travel freely between Canada and their home country without having to reapply for a TRV each time.
To apply, candidates must be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and must provide documentation to confirm this relationship, such as a birth certificate. While spouses or common-law partners can be included on the application, dependent children cannot.
Applicants must also submit a signed invitation letter from their Canadian child or grandchild. This letter needs to include a commitment to financially support the applicant during their stay, details of the host’s household, and a copy of the host’s Canadian citizenship or permanent residency documents.
Additionally, proof of valid medical insurance is required. The insurance must be from a Canadian provider, offer a minimum of $100,000 in emergency coverage, and be valid for at least one year from the date of entry. However, a regulatory change from December 7, 2022, now allows applicants to submit applications without first fully paying for the insurance policy.
While the Super Visa doesn’t offer permanent residency like the PGP does, it remains an excellent option for families wanting to stay connected across borders. As Canada continues to prioritize family reunification, this visa route is a flexible, reliable, and often faster alternative.
For families eager to reunite without long waits or quotas, the Super Visa represents a practical and accessible bridge toward spending meaningful time together in Canada.
