Meet the 12 Parliamentarians Steering Canada’s Immigration Policy

Maple News reports that Canada has confirmed the 12 Members of Parliament (MPs) who will serve on the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration (CIMM). This influential committee plays a key role in evaluating federal immigration and multiculturalism policies, as well as overseeing the operations of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB).

The CIMM is tasked with scrutinizing a wide range of immigration-related matters. These include reviewing legislation, monitoring application backlogs, assessing the effectiveness of immigration programs, and ensuring agencies remain aligned with their mandates. While its recommendations are not binding on the ruling government, its findings have the power to influence future policy decisions.

In previous sessions, the committee conducted a significant study on the effects of COVID-19 on Canada’s immigration system. The resulting insights and proposals contributed reflective analysis for improving IRCC’s adaptability and responsiveness during crises.

The committee features MPs from all officially recognized political parties in the House of Commons—defined as parties holding at least 12 seats. These appointments represent a mix of political perspectives and regional constituencies, ensuring broader national representation in immigration policymaking.

The current roster includes:

– Shafqat Ali (Liberal Party), representing Brampton Centre, Ontario. First elected in 2021, Ali brings a background in real estate.
– Alexis Brunelle-Duceppe (Bloc Québécois), representing Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. Elected in 2019, Brunelle-Duceppe has experience in both the paper and film industries, and serves as one of the committee’s vice chairs.

More details about the remaining 10 MPs will be confirmed following the committee’s first meeting scheduled for December 14, during which members will elect a chair and begin their legislative work.

As policies around immigration continue to evolve, this committee’s oversight will be vital for ensuring Canada’s systems remain fair, efficient, and resilient. Maple News will continue to track CIMM developments as they unfold.
