How to Get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) Through WES to Boost Your Immigration Score

Maple News reports that with Canada aiming to welcome nearly 1.5 million new permanent residents by 2026, international professionals eyeing immigration now have a clearer path forward—especially with tools like the Educational Credential Assessment (ECA). For those applying through economic pathways such as Express Entry, an ECA can significantly enhance their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

An ECA is used to verify foreign academic qualifications—such as degrees or diplomas—and determine their Canadian equivalents. This assessment allows candidates to claim additional CRS points for their educational achievements, potentially improving their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada.

For example, individuals with foreign degrees can gain up to 150 additional CRS points if their credentials are properly assessed. This makes an ECA particularly valuable for applicants who studied outside Canada, especially those applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or Canadian Experience Class.

World Education Services (WES) is one of only five organizations authorized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to provide ECAs. WES is known for fast processing—typically issuing reports within 30 business days of receiving complete documentation and payment.

To apply for an ECA through WES, candidates must first create an online account and choose the ECA application type for IRCC. They should then provide details about their highest completed credential—usually a master’s or bachelor’s degree. The issuing institution is required to send official academic transcripts directly to WES.

Applicants should thoroughly review and confirm all submitted information before making a payment through a secure online method. After submission, WES will issue a reference number that should be retained for future correspondence. Progress updates can be tracked anytime via the applicant’s WES account dashboard.

WES also offers services in both English and French, including bilingual customer support and a fully translated application process, making the experience accessible to a broader range of users across Canada.

According to Maple News, as competition for permanent residence intensifies, securing an ECA remains one of the most effective ways to stand out in the Express Entry pool. Candidates are encouraged to start their credential assessment early in their immigration journey to maximize their opportunities for success.
