How Cameroonians Can Immigrate to Canada: Key Pathways to Permanent Residency

Maple News reports that immigration from Cameroon to Canada was steadily increasing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2015 and 2019, the number of Cameroonian newcomers rose by 45%, reaching 2,950 new permanent residents in 2019. However, the pandemic impacted immigration volumes significantly, with only 780 Cameroonians making the move by mid-2020.

As of Canada’s 2016 national census, over 10,000 individuals of Cameroonian origin were living in the country. Cameroon also ranked among the leading countries of birth for Black immigrants who arrived through economic-class programs between 2011 and 2016.

Canada offers over 100 economic immigration pathways, making the process seem overwhelming at first—but understanding the options is an important first step. One of the most popular routes for skilled workers from Cameroon is the Express Entry system.

Express Entry is a federal system that manages immigration applications under three main programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Federal Skilled Trades Program, and the Canadian Experience Class. Candidates are evaluated through a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), which awards up to 1,200 points based on factors such as age, work experience, education, and language proficiency in English or French.

Candidates with the highest CRS scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) from the Canadian government. Once invited, they can submit a full application for permanent residence.

Another viable option for Cameroonians is Canada’s network of Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). These allow individual provinces and territories to nominate immigrants who meet their specific regional labour market needs. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to a candidate’s CRS score, greatly increasing the likelihood of receiving an ITA.

Navigating the many immigration streams available requires research and, in many cases, personalized guidance. But with a strong record of welcoming Cameroonian immigrants and a wide range of economic immigration options, Canada remains an attractive destination for those seeking a new life abroad.

Maple News will continue to provide in-depth coverage on developments in Canadian immigration opportunities for individuals from around the globe.
