Maple News reports that applications for the 2024 International Experience Canada (IEC) program will close on October 21, marking the final opportunity for eligible international youth to apply this season.
The IEC is a temporary work permit initiative designed for young people aged 18 to 35 (or 18 to 30, depending on the country) from over 30 nations that have Youth Mobility Agreements with Canada. Launched by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the IEC pool for 2024 opened in December with an application intake cap of 90,000.
This government-led exchange initiative allows applicants to live and work in Canada for a set period while gaining international experience. In return, Canadian citizens can also apply to similar mobility programs available in these partner countries, fostering mutual cultural and professional exchange.
The IEC operates through a profile-based selection system. Interested candidates create an IEC profile and enter a country- and category-specific pool. From this pool, IRCC invites selected candidates to formally apply for a work permit. The number of times a candidate can participate—and in which categories—depends on their country of citizenship.
There are three main streams under the IEC program:
1. Working Holiday: Offers an open work permit, allowing participants to work for nearly any employer in Canada.
2. Young Professionals: Provides employer-specific work permits for career-related employment aligned with the applicant’s field of study or experience.
3. International Co-op (Internship): Focused on students who wish to gain experience related to their field of study through employer-specific work placements.
Each applicant must meet eligibility criteria set jointly by IRCC and their home country’s agreements. The earlier applicants submit their details, the higher their chances of receiving an invitation to apply.
With the deadline less than a week away, potential IEC candidates are encouraged to verify their eligibility and finalize their applications as soon as possible.
