Maple News reports that Canada continues to accept permanent residence applications under the Home Support Worker Pilot, a key pathway for foreign caregivers seeking to establish a life in the country. As of now, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has stated that the program has not yet reached its application cap.
Launched in 2019 alongside the Home Child Care Provider Pilot, the Home Support Worker Pilot is one of two five-year immigration initiatives designed to bring skilled caregivers and their families to Canada. While the Home Child Care Provider Pilot has already hit its annual intake limit of 2,750 applications, the Home Support Worker category remains open.
Applicants who have already submitted their paperwork to either pilot do not need to contact IRCC. The government agency will directly notify applicants once their files begin processing — although IRCC has cautioned that COVID-19 may delay communications.
These caregiver pilots offer a direct path to permanent residency for qualified individuals. Candidates are eligible to apply if they have secured job offers as child care or home support workers. Additionally, they may include family members in their application, making the program an attractive opportunity for those seeking stability and long-term settlement in Canada.
Applicants with at least 24 months of eligible Canadian work experience in caregiving — specifically in child care or home support roles — may qualify under the pilots. It is important to note that experience as a foster parent or housekeeper does not meet eligibility criteria. Applicants must present documentation proving their work history.
In some cases, individuals who do not yet have the full 24 months of experience can still apply, provided they meet all other eligibility criteria. Such candidates may be issued an occupation-restricted open work permit, allowing them to gain the necessary experience in Canada.
This open status for the Home Support Worker Pilot presents a significant opportunity for foreign caregivers at a time when immigration pathways remain competitive and in high demand. Prospective applicants are encouraged to act promptly, as caps can be reached at any time without prior notice from IRCC.
