Canada’s Express Entry Expands: Who Qualifies Under the New Transport Category

Maple News reports that Canada has created a new Transport category within Express Entry, prioritizing permanent residence for foreign nationals with work experience in four transport-related occupations. The changes took effect on February 18, 2026, as part of an effort to address labor needs in aviation and the broader transport sector.

Eligible occupations (with their NOC codes) are: Air pilots, flight engineers and flying instructors (NOC 72600); Automotive service technicians, truck and bus mechanics, and mechanical repairers (NOC 72410); Aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors (NOC 72404); and Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors (NOC 22313). Applicants must have at least 12 months of skilled work experience in one of these occupations within the past three years, and the experience does not need to be continuous.

Prior to the February 18 changes, qualifying required six months of continuous work experience in an eligible occupation. The new rule allows non-continuous experience to count, provided the total is 12 months within the three-year window.

Qualifying under a transport occupation provides a CRS advantage by allowing invitations at a lower score than some other Express Entry pathways, such as Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draws or general draws. This can translate into faster access to permanent residence for suitable candidates.

What applicants should do next: To determine eligibility, compare your duties to the NOC descriptions above and gather documentation of your work experience. Where applicable, begin planning for licensure in Canada, as many transport-related occupations require provincial licensing or certification. Maple News will continue to monitor developments and provide practical guidance on the licensing process and any provincial requirements for these trades.
