Maple News reports that, starting April 1, 2026, Canadian passport applications are to be processed within 30 business days, or the applicant will receive a full refund of the passport fees. The policy, announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and confirmed in a March 3, 2026 online release, marks a formal money-back guarantee for passport services.\n\nThe guarantee applies to all application channels—online, in person, or by mail—and covers the following passport types: adult five-year, adult 10-year, child regular; adult five-year and 10-year passports issued abroad; and temporary passports. It also extends to adult refugee travel documents and adult certificates of identity if processing standards are not met.\n\nRefunds for applications submitted within Canada or the United States will be issued as cheques mailed to the address on file. For applications submitted from outside Canada or the US that are not processed within 30 days, refunds will be issued to the original payment method where possible (credit card) or via cheque or electronic funds transfer.\n\nThe policy is intended to strengthen accountability and streamline passport services, offering Canadians a simpler and more predictable experience. It follows an initial 2025 government pledge that IRCC aimed to implement the measure later in 2025, a deadline that was not met until now.\n\nMaple News will continue to follow the rollout and share guidance for applicants on how refunds are issued and how to track service standards as this program unfolds.
