Canada to Launch Streamlined SIN Access for Newcomers Through IRCC Accounts

Maple News reports that Canada is set to simplify the process of issuing Social Insurance Numbers (SIN) for newcomers through a new integrated digital service, SIN@Entry. Scheduled for rollout during the 2025–2026 fiscal year, the program aims to make it easier for people immigrating to Canada to access essential services faster and more securely.

In collaboration with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) is developing SIN@Entry as part of a broader digital transformation. The new program will allow eligible applicants—such as those applying for work permits or permanent residency—to request and receive their SIN directly within their secure IRCC online account.

This move eliminates the need for a separate application through Service Canada, streamlining paperwork and reducing friction in the settlement process. Applicants will also be able to immediately access their SIN Confirmation Letter within the same portal, further supporting prompt integration into the Canadian workforce and tax system.

A SIN is a mandatory nine-digit number for anyone who wishes to work, pay taxes, or receive government benefits in Canada. Under the current system, newcomers typically must visit Service Canada offices to complete the SIN registration—something the government plans to significantly reduce through this new initiative.

According to Canada’s first State of Service Report released earlier in March, the introduction of SIN@Entry could cut down in-person visits to Service Canada by as much as 50%. This efficiency gain is expected not only to benefit newcomers but to help all Canadians by lightening the load on federal service centers.

It is important to distinguish SIN@Entry from the earlier SIN@Landing program, which provides SINs for certain permanent residents upon arrival. SIN@Entry extends digital access to a wider group of immigration applicants, including temporary foreign workers.

Although an exact launch date has not been officially confirmed, officials say the rollout will happen within the current fiscal year. The effort reflects Canada’s ongoing commitment to modernizing immigration processes and enhancing the newcomer experience through improved digital services.
