Canada Launches Six New Immigration Pathways for Essential Workers and Graduates

Maple News reports that Canada is opening six new pathways to permanent residency for temporary residents currently living in the country. Starting May 6 at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will begin accepting applications under these specially created immigration streams.

These streams are designed to offer permanent residency to essential workers in healthcare and other vital sectors, as well as recent international graduates from Canadian institutions. In total, up to 90,000 spots will be made available, providing a significant opportunity for those who have been contributing to Canada’s labor force during the pandemic.

IRCC has published detailed guidance on how to apply and who qualifies. Applicants can include family members such as spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children under the age of 22—or older, if they have a disability—on their applications.

To apply, candidates must first confirm their eligibility based on IRCC’s criteria, collect the required documentation, complete the application forms, pay processing fees, and then submit their application online. The list of necessary forms includes the Generic Application Form for Canada (IMM 0008), Schedule A (IMM 5669), and others depending on the circumstances.

Applicants with disabilities may request alternative formats for completing the application and are advised to submit their accommodation requests before May 20, 2021—or before the stream’s intake limit is reached, whichever occurs later. Requests can be submitted via email or phone to IRCC’s Client Support Centre.

IRCC has held several technical briefings with immigration experts and legal representatives to ensure a smooth rollout. The goal is clear: to recognize the contributions of those who have kept Canada functioning during the pandemic and help them lay down permanent roots.

This initiative is part of Canada’s broader effort to meet immigration targets despite ongoing travel restrictions, shifting focus to applicants already inside the country. It signals a proactive and responsive approach to immigration in a time of global uncertainty.

Maple News will continue to provide detailed updates and insights as these pathways unfold, helping applicants stay informed and prepared.
