Maple News reports that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has issued 5,900 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) in a special Express Entry draw focused on candidates with professional experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. This category-based selection required a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 481.
This December 8 draw was the third to take place in just one week, signaling a renewed pace in Canada’s immigration strategy following a pause in invitations that lasted over a month. On December 7, IRCC invited 1,000 French-speaking candidates with a minimum CRS score of 470. Just a day earlier, 4,750 candidates were picked in an all-program draw with a significantly higher CRS cutoff of 561.
The recent surge in activity follows a lull caused by technical issues within the Express Entry system. In mid-November, IRCC acknowledged system disruptions that temporarily prevented candidates from uploading documents required to complete their applications. Although the issue was resolved within days, no official reason was offered for the extended break in draws.
The December 8 STEM-focused selection marks one of the largest category-based draws since IRCC introduced targeted invitations earlier this year. These category-based rounds allow the government to prioritize candidates who possess attributes deemed essential to Canada’s economic and societal needs.
Looking back, the most recent similar draw for STEM professionals occurred on July 5, offering 500 ITAs with a higher minimum CRS score of 486. This latest draw demonstrates a strategic push by IRCC to meet labor market gaps by tapping into a growing pool of skilled global talent.
Since category-based Express Entry draws began in May 2023, IRCC has issued ITAs to candidates with experience in healthcare, trades, transport, agriculture, and those demonstrating strong French language skills. The approach not only aligns with Canada’s demographic and labor force needs but also complements broader immigration targets as outlined in recent multi-year plans.
Canada’s Express Entry system remains one of the most efficient and competitive immigration pathways globally. With faster draw sequences and focused selection categories, applicants with in-demand skills now have clearer routes to permanent residency.
