Canada Imposes Travel Ban on Seven Southern African Nations Amid Omicron Variant Concerns

Maple News reports that the Canadian government has introduced new travel restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the recently identified Omicron COVID-19 variant. Effective November 26, foreign nationals who have traveled through seven southern African countries within the past 14 days will not be permitted to enter Canada.

The affected countries include South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, and Mozambique. This decision follows the World Health Organization’s classification of Omicron (B.1.1.529) as a “variant of concern” due to its high number of mutations and potential increased transmissibility.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents returning from these regions will still be allowed to re-enter the country. However, they must do so through a third country and provide a negative result from a molecular COVID-19 test administered in that transit country before boarding their flight to Canada.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos advised all travelers currently in Canada who have recently been in southern Africa to undergo COVID-19 testing and self-isolate until they receive a negative result. These precautions are part of a broader government effort to monitor and contain possible cases of Omicron before they arrive in the country.

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra confirmed that the new measures will remain in effect until at least January 31, 2022. He also announced mandatory testing requirements for all Canadian travelers who have been to the impacted nations within the last two weeks.

As of the date of the announcement, there have been no confirmed cases of the Omicron variant in Canada. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam emphasized that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advised Canadians to remain vigilant.

Canadians who find themselves stranded abroad due to these restrictions are encouraged to contact the federal government’s emergency watch and response center for assistance.

These proactive steps position Canada among a growing list of countries implementing border controls and testing protocols aimed at limiting the spread of emerging COVID-19 variants.

Maple News continues to monitor updates on international travel policy changes and their implications for Canadian residents and immigrants.
