Canada Extends Targeted Work Permit Extensions for Iranians Through March 2027

Maple News reports that, effective March 1, 2026, Canada has updated its special measures for Iranian nationals and extended eligibility through March 31, 2027. The new framework narrows eligibility to certain work-permit holders, focusing on extensions rather than broader open permits or study-status changes.

Iranian workers in Canada who wish to renew their work permits may apply if they meet all of the following: they are Iranian nationals with a valid passport; they are in Canada and hold a valid work permit both at the time of application and when IRCC makes a decision; their initial work permit was issued on or before February 28, 2025; they have not previously received a work permit extension under these special measures (no second extension); and they meet all standard eligibility and admissibility requirements for a work permit extension.

Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2027, and applicants must satisfy all general work-permit requirements beyond the specific exemptions of the policy.

According to Maple News, this policy follows the expiry of the prior temporary policy for Iranian nationals in Canada, but the current measures are narrower in scope and provisions. For workers in Canada, the emphasis is on extending an existing valid permit rather than creating new paths like open work permits or study permits. The eligibility cutoff relies on an initial permit issued by February 28, 2025, rather than the arrival date used by the expired policy.

Other key changes include the removal of opportunities for visitors or students to switch status under these special measures, meaning they must pursue standard application routes. The new policy also makes clear that it is a one-time extension: those who have already received a work-permit extension under these measures cannot obtain a second extension.

For those seeking more information, IRCC’s official pages on Iranian nationals in Canada provide the current criteria and procedures. Maple News will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as policies evolve.
