Canada Extends Special Open Work Permit Policy for Iranians Until 2026

Maple News reports that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has extended its special temporary public policy that allows eligible Iranian nationals in Canada to apply for open work permits and initial study permits under relaxed conditions. The extension pushes the policy’s expiration date to February 28, 2026, providing continued flexibility and support to Iranian residents facing challenges due to geopolitical instability.

This policy applies to Iranian citizens who are already in Canada with a valid temporary resident status and who arrived on or before February 28, 2025. It enables them to apply for new open work permits, extend existing ones, or submit an application for their first Canadian study permit, without needing to meet many of the standard requirements normally imposed on foreign nationals.

One of the key features of this initiative is the ability to obtain open work permits for a duration of up to two years. Unlike employer-specific work permits, open permits grant holders the freedom to work for almost any employer in Canada, offering greater employment flexibility and access to economic opportunities.

According to Maple News, eligible applicants under this policy also receive priority processing, ensuring quicker issuance of permits when compared to regular application timelines. This expedited processing is particularly helpful for those navigating uncertainty in their home country while looking to secure stability in Canada.

Furthermore, Iranian nationals applying for a Canadian study permit for the first time may benefit from these relaxed rules, making it easier to pursue higher education during their stay in Canada. This includes potential exemptions from some financial or document requirements typically associated with study permit applications.

The Canadian government introduced this temporary public policy in response to the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran, aiming to offer continued humanitarian support and pathways to legal work and study for those already in Canada.

The extension of this policy underscores Canada’s commitment to supporting Iranian nationals through practical immigration measures. Eligible individuals are encouraged to review the specific terms of the policy and submit their applications before the February 28, 2026 deadline.

Maple News will continue to monitor future updates from IRCC regarding immigration pathways for protected groups and at-risk populations.
