Canada Extends Direct Flight Ban from India Amid COVID-19 Concerns

Maple News reports that Canada has extended its suspension of direct commercial and passenger flights from India until July 21, 2021, as part of ongoing measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 and its variants. The flight ban, initially introduced on April 22 for both India and Pakistan, was first set to expire on May 22 but was extended due to health concerns. While Pakistan’s flight restrictions were lifted on June 21, India’s was kept in place due to persistently high case numbers and the presence of highly transmissible variants.

Canada’s Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, stated that the decision to prolong the flight ban stems from the “very high” number of COVID-19 cases in India. “We will continue to assess the evolving situation and determine appropriate actions going forward,” he said.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, earlier warned of the increased transmissibility of the variant first identified in India, further supporting the government’s cautious approach to reopening.

Despite the extended travel restriction, Canada has begun easing other border measures. Effective June 21, individuals holding a valid Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) document are now allowed to travel to Canada. However, those with expired COPRs must wait for further guidance on document renewals.

In an additional update to travel regulations, Canada is set to relax mandatory quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated exempt travelers starting July 5, 2021. Eligible individuals—including Canadian citizens, permanent residents, certain foreign workers, COPR holders, and international students at approved institutions—will no longer need to quarantine upon arrival or stay at a government-approved hotel. They are still required, however, to present negative COVID-19 tests before departure and upon arrival.

These steps reflect a broader effort by the Canadian government to balance public health with the country’s immigration goals. Maple News will continue to monitor and report on changes as they unfold.

For now, travelers from India should stay informed about ongoing updates and prepare for longer wait times before direct flights resume.
