Canada Begins Issuing Invitations Under Delayed 2020 Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Lottery

Maple News reports that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially begun issuing invitations for the 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially scheduled for late 2020, the invitation round was postponed as IRCC adapted its processes during the global crisis.

Individuals selected in this latest draw now have 60 days to submit a complete sponsorship application to IRCC. However, given ongoing disruptions caused by the pandemic, the department has announced flexible measures. Applicants unable to provide required documentation within the initial 60-day window may receive an additional 90 days, provided they explain and prove the challenges they’re facing.

The PGP program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency. To be eligible, sponsors must be at least 18 years old, reside in Canada, meet minimum income requirements over the past three years, and sign a legal undertaking confirming financial support for the sponsored persons. The duration of this financial commitment is 20 years for those outside Quebec and 10 years for Quebec residents.

The initial intake period for the 2020 program took place from October 13 to November 3, during which interested individuals could submit an online interest-to-sponsor form. IRCC then conducted a random draw to select potential sponsors. Invitations are now being gradually sent to those selected, over a 10-day period.

Looking ahead, IRCC has announced that the 2021 edition of the Parents and Grandparents Program will be significantly expanded. Up to 30,000 sponsorship applications will be accepted, triple the number from 2020. A new lottery will be used, with announcement details expected early in the coming year. As with the previous round, interested individuals will need to submit an interest-to-sponsor online form and await the randomized selection.

This approach by Canada reflects the country’s commitment to family reunification despite pandemic-related hurdles. As IRCC continues to manage its programs with increased flexibility, applicants are encouraged to stay informed and prepare their documentation early.

Maple News will continue to provide detailed updates as the PGP 2021 program unfolds.
