Maple News reports that the province of British Columbia has issued 52 new invitations to skilled tech workers through its BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) Tech stream. The draw took place on June 29 and targeted candidates currently working in the information technology sector.
The BC PNP Tech is a specialized fast-track pathway designed to attract international tech talent to the province. To qualify for this stream, candidates must be registered in one of British Columbia’s existing immigration categories—Express Entry BC or Skills Immigration—and create a profile through the Skills Immigration Registration System (SIRS). This system scores applicants based on various factors, including education, work experience, and employment offer.
For this draw, candidates from the Skilled Worker and International Graduate subcategories were invited, and a minimum provincial score of 80 was required. Selected candidates now have 30 calendar days to submit a complete application for a provincial nomination.
Originally launched in May 2017 as a pilot program to address growing talent shortages in B.C.’s tech industry, the BC PNP Tech was made permanent in 2021 following strong industry demand and success in attracting global talent. To be eligible, applicants must have a valid job offer lasting at least one year in one of 29 approved tech occupations.
Unlike other BC PNP streams, job offers under the Tech stream must be full-time, with at least 120 days remaining at the time of application. Offers must also come from an eligible B.C. employer.
The BC PNP Tech sends out invitations weekly to high-scoring candidates who meet all eligibility requirements. Once invited, candidates generally receive their provincial nomination decision within two to three months of applying.
If approved, candidates can then seek permanent residence in Canada through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) class. This pathway offers an accelerated route for international tech professionals looking to make B.C. their permanent home.
Through initiatives like BC PNP Tech, British Columbia continues to strengthen its status as a leading tech hub in Canada by ensuring that employers have access to the skilled workers they need to remain competitive on the global stage.
