Canada Introduces New Immigration Support Measures for Lebanese Nationals

Maple News reports that Canada has announced new immigration facilitation measures to assist those impacted by the ongoing crisis in Beirut, Lebanon. These steps aim to support both Canadians and Lebanese nationals who have been affected by the aftermath of the explosion in Beirut.

Canadian citizens and permanent residents currently in Lebanon who wish to return to Canada may now receive priority processing for essential travel documents, including permanent resident travel documents (PRTDs) and Canadian passports.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has also confirmed it is prioritizing visitor visa applications for the immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This includes individuals who were residing in specific Beirut neighborhoods significantly affected by the explosion. Eligible family members under this measure include spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, and parents or step-parents.

Furthermore, Lebanese citizens who are temporarily living in Canada and unable to return home due to the crisis may apply to extend their stay. This includes extensions of temporary resident status, study permits, and work permits.

In an effort to ease financial burdens, the Canadian government is waiving fees for a range of services. This includes no-cost issuance of PRTDs, temporary and regular Canadian passports, replacement citizenship certificates, emergency travel documents, and renewals of study and work permits. However, individuals applying for a Canadian citizenship certificate for the first time will still be subject to the standard fee.

While the PRTD itself may be covered under the fee waiver policy, applicants may still be required to pay a service fee to submit the application at the Visa Application Centre in Beirut.

To support implementation of these initiatives, Canada previously set up an immigration task force in Beirut. This team is working to ensure timely access to consular and immigration services for those impacted by the crisis.

These measures underscore Canada’s continued commitment to supporting both its citizens and vulnerable populations abroad during times of crisis, by prioritizing safety, family reunification, and humanitarian response.
