Maple News reports that Statistics Canada is gearing up for the 2026 Census of Population by launching a major hiring campaign for approximately 32,000 positions across the country. This nationwide recruitment effort is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and valid work permit holders, including many newcomers seeking to build Canadian work experience.
The majority of roles are classified as either enumerator (non-supervisory) or crew leader (supervisory), both essential to the comprehensive data collection that will take place in May 2026. Hiring is expected to begin between March and July 2026.
Eligible applicants must reside in Canada, possess a valid Canadian work permit (or be a citizen or permanent resident), and have reached the age of majority in their province or territory of residence—18 years in most provinces, 19 in others. Applicants meeting these criteria can apply by completing an online form, which takes fewer than 10 minutes to fill out.
Those applying must provide two professional references. While interviews are required for supervisory roles, enumerator positions generally do not involve interviews. All shortlisted candidates will undergo a security screening process. Applicants should note that only those in geographic areas where positions are available will be contacted.
Significantly, Statistics Canada has confirmed that work completed in these census roles may count toward Canadian Experience Class (CEC) eligibility—an immigration stream under the Express Entry system offering a pathway to permanent residency. For work permit holders aiming to establish permanent roots in Canada, this is a rare chance to gain qualifying experience while contributing to an important national initiative.
From urban centres to rural communities, the census jobs span every corner of Canada, offering flexible employment and the unique opportunity to contribute to shaping national policy through data collection.
Applications will be accepted until July 31, 2026.
Maple News will continue to monitor these developments and report updates as Statistics Canada progresses through its 2026 census hiring campaign.
