Can You Keep Working While Waiting for Your PGWP? Here’s What IRCC Says

According to Maple News, international graduates awaiting a decision on their Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) application can continue working full-time in Canada—even if their interim work authorization has expired.

Graduates who apply for a PGWP after completing their studies in Canada are typically issued an interim work authorization letter (IMM 0127 E). This letter allows them to work while Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) processes their application. The interim authorization is valid for up to 180 days.

However, current processing times for PGWPs within Canada have risen to approximately 227 days—nearly eight months—according to IRCC’s latest updates. As a result, many applicants may find their interim work authorization expires before receiving a decision on their PGWP.

Despite this, IRCC has clarified on its website that eligible international graduates may continue working full-time while waiting for their PGWP—even after the 180-day interim period ends. This policy ensures that applicants remain in legal working status and do not face employment disruption due to processing delays.

To be eligible for this continued work authorization, graduates must have submitted a complete PGWP application while their study permit was still valid and meet all other criteria set by IRCC. As long as these conditions are met, employers can be assured that their international hires are authorized to work under Canadian law.

However, it is important to note that this applies only to individuals who received the interim work authorization letter upon submission of their PGWP application. Those who did not receive this letter may not be eligible to work while waiting for a PGWP decision.

For PGWP applicants and their employers, keeping a copy of this interim letter on file can be useful when verifying employment eligibility. IRCC’s guidance provides much-needed clarity during this period of extended processing backlogs.

As PGWP processing times fluctuate, staying informed on IRCC updates and ensuring timely, complete applications are submitted remains essential for international students looking to transition into the Canadian workforce.
