Alberta Leads Canada in Population Growth, Driven by Immigration and Affordability

Maple News reports that Alberta has recorded the fastest population growth rate among all Canadian provinces, driven largely by immigration and affordability factors that continue to attract newcomers from both within and outside of Canada.

According to the latest data from Alberta’s Office of Statistics and Information, the province’s population surged by 204,677 people between April 2023 and April 2024—a 4.41% increase. This marks Alberta’s most rapid year-over-year growth rate since 1981 and far exceeds the national average of 3.20%.

Much of this boom comes from international immigration. In just the first quarter of 2024, Alberta welcomed a net increase of 32,893 newcomers through various immigration streams, including permanent residents, international students, work permit holders, and asylum seekers.

Interprovincial migration has also played a significant role. Between July 2022 and July 2023, Alberta experienced the highest net gain of population from other Canadian provinces, surpassing even traditionally popular destinations like British Columbia. Major urban centers across the province saw substantial growth: Calgary added 26,662 residents, Edmonton gained 16,082, Lethbridge attracted 1,651, and Red Deer increased by 1,277.

In contrast, many Ontario cities saw a net outflow of residents during the same time frame, as Canadians increasingly looked westward in search of a more affordable lifestyle and better job prospects.

Experts point to several reasons for Alberta’s growing appeal. A report from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation highlights lower housing costs and a resilient economy as key factors. While Alberta’s real estate market has heated up in recent years, home prices remain significantly lower compared to provinces like Ontario and British Columbia.

This combination of economic opportunity, affordable living, and a high demand for skilled workers makes Alberta an increasingly attractive destination for immigrants, families, and job seekers across Canada.

With policies supporting both permanent and temporary residents, Alberta continues to reinforce its role as a leading hub for newcomers looking to build a future in Canada.
